Understanding a child or young adult’s academic, social, emotional, behavioral, or attention-related challenges can be complex and overwhelming. How Do I Know if Psychological Evaluation is Right for My Child?
A psychological evaluation can identify your child’s strengths and challenges, and it can be especially valuable when there are concerns that impact their daily functioning. An evaluation is often appropriate when there are ongoing difficulties related to learning, academic performance, attention, executive functioning, social relationships, or emotional difficulties such as anxiety or depression. A comprehensive view of a child’s functioning will be provided in various areas, which will guide the next steps for addressing any presenting challenges.
What to Expect from the Evaluation Process:
-
Initial Consultation: This is a 50-minute appointment where Dr. Scheinfield meets with parents or young adults (ages 18+) to gather background information, discuss the current concerns and goals for the evaluation, and determine the appropriate type of evaluation. The consultation can be done virtually or in person.
-
Testing: These sessions involve a series of assessment measures that are tailored to the individual’s needs. Testing typically takes place over 2–3 in-person sessions and may include cognitive, academic, emotional, and/or behavioral measures to gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s functioning in these areas.
-
Feedback Session: In this 50-minute session, Dr. Scheinfield meets with the individual (ages 18+) or parent to review the findings of the evaluation. The results are explained in a practical manner and personalized recommendations for treatment or next steps are provided. The feedback appointment can be done virtually or in person.
-
Written Report: A detailed written report is provided after the feedback session has been completed. It includes the testing results, clinical impressions, and specific recommendations to support the individual at home, in school, and beyond.
-
Ongoing Support: Following the evaluation, Dr. Scheinfield offers continued care based upon each individual’s needs. This may include therapy, school consultation, parent coaching, or referrals to trusted specialists such as tutors, psychiatrists, or other treatment providers.
